Sony Clinches Digital China Deal
LAS VEGAS, Nevada, April 22, 2001 - Sony Hong Kong today announced that its Shanghai office was offered to provide the PetaSite, in addition to HDCAM and 6-channel HD studio camera, to Shanghai Municipal Administration of Culture, Radio, Film & TV Bureau (SMACRFT), the leading organization in China dedicated to the advancement of technology and oversees 3 TV stations (including Shanghai TV, Oriental TV & Shanghai Cable TV) and 2 radio stations. Shanghai becomes the first city in China committed to digital archiving solution in line with the migration from analog to digital, SDTV to HDTV in this rapidly developing country.

In China, Shanghai Municipal Administration of Culture, Radio, Film & TV Bureau (SMACRFT), is completely synonymous with, and indivisible from, the social fabric of the country. The broadcaster's 100,000- hour video archive represents a unique historical record of the city's development.

The challenge that the Shanghai broadcaster facing is to develop a strategy to protect and preserve this invaluable video archive. In a move intended to develop the technology, operational processes and software required to transfer the existing analogue material, SMACRFT teamed up with Sony to produce a total solution.Digital archive storage system emerges as one of the latest technology for digital data storage. Nowadays most of the audio and visual signals are primarily stored in either analogue or digital Betacam format. SMACRFT becomes the forerunner in China to employ PetaSite. DTF-2 was launched in year 2000. Its surprisingly large capacity of 200GB is able to store more than 30-hour of Betacam SP visual and audio data, which is MPEG-2 formatted and has the greatest data storage capacity among all the tape-recording products in the market. For the larger storage system, SONY offers a constructive tailor made DMS-8400 system with up to 11PB storage capacity which equivalent to 2 million broadcasting hours.

"The strategic importance of this partnership cannot be understated," said Yoshihiko Iyama, General Manager of China Division and Chief Representative in China of Broadcasting and Professional Products Company, a division company of Sony Corp. of Hong Kong Ltd. "We are developing MPEG2 as a digital production system and archiving is a key component in this. The opportunity to work closely with one of China's premier broadcasters will produce significant benefits for both organizations. We relish this opportunity which is great news for us, SMACRFT will benefit the whole broadcast industry."

Sony also has been awarded a large order of HDCAM for SMACRFT's first 1080/50i HD OB van to be built in 2001. The Multi-format HD Studio camera system - HDC-950 and HDCAM VTRs will enhance the production value.

With the genuine partnership with Shanghai Municipal Administration of Culture, Radio, Film & TV Bureau, Sony is able to consolidate its leading position and to maximize its customer relationship with the China broadcasting industry.

Noteworthy is in year 2000 Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen have already started to broadcast HD program on trial and has received encouraging response. Therefore, these major cities had purchased HD VTR, HD Camcorder and HD Camera for high-end production. Sony has acquired 100% HD VTR and HD Camcorder market share in PRC.
